| Course description | This course offers an introduction to the biblical stories and themes which echo throughout literature in English. An exploration of the differences between quotation, allusion and echo, and the notion of reception criticism, will be followed by a thematic survey of key biblical narratives, and examples of their use in literary texts will be discussed. The influence of the King James Version will be assessed, and other translations considered. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
1. An understanding of theories of intertexuality as they relate to the Bible and literature.
2. A knowledge of key biblical stories and themes.
3. The ability to discuss the significance of these stories and themes where they appear in selected literary texts.
4. The ability to assess critically secondary literature about the relationship between the Bible and literature.
5. Demonstrate an ability to identify key terms and their meanings.
6) Demonstrate good judgement about how to judge the relative importance of items on course bibliographies. |
Assessment Information
Written degree exam (60%);
Two 1000 word essays, each worth 15% (30% in total);
Tutorial sheets and participation (10%). |
