Course descriptionThis half-course studies the problems of and prospects for economic development in less developed countries. Topics covered include: the meaning of development; theories of development and structural change; institutions and economic development; urbanisation and rural-urban migration; strategies of rural development; famine, hunger and poverty; trade and development; capital flows and foreign aid; the environment and development.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Economics 1 (ECNM08013)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
An understanding of the problems of and prospects for economic development in less developed countries.

After successful completion of this course students should have developed their general skills of critical analysis and assessment; obtaining and processing information from a variety of sources; presentation and communication skills; interpersonal and groups skills; independent action and initiative; managing tasks and time.
Assessment Information
Mid-semester (MCQ) examination: 10%
Essay 15%
Degree Exam: 75%

- Tutorial attendance: Tutorial penalty 6 marks deducted for 4 missed tutorials, 8 marks deducted for 5 missed tutorials, 10 marks deducted for 6 missed tutorials, 12 marks deducted for 7 missed tutorials, 14 marks deducted for 8 missed tutorials, 18 marks deducted for 9 missed tutorials.

Resit Exam (August diet): 100%
