Course Outline
SchoolSchool of Engineering CollegeCollege of Science and Engineering
Course typeStandard AvailabilityAvailable to all students
Credit level (Normal year taken)SCQF Level 8 (Year 2 Undergraduate) Credits10
Home subject areaElectronics Other subject areaNone
Course website None Taught in Gaelic? No
Course descriptionThe students will design, build and test a printed circuit board
for the speech digitiser circuit developed in the project
laboratory 2A course.

The fundamental characteristics of the digital signal abstraction
are investigated along with the properties of basic logic
function gates. Using a progressive modular approach, simple
arithmetic and control function hardware is constructed and its
performance measured and analysed.

The laboratory lays the foundation for measurement, analysis
and interpretation of the performance of digital systems
studied in later years. The content is directly linked to the
course Digital System Design 2.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Be familiar with the use of printed circuit board software tools
to implement an electronic circuit.

Be able to build and test a previously designed printed circuit
board.

Development of skill in the recording of laboratory
investigations and the use of records in the inference of knowledge.

Understanding of key features of the digital signal and its
fundamental interactions with combinational and sequential gates.

Understanding of the meaning and significance of worst-case
performance specifications.

Ability to measure and recognise circuit-level failures resulting
from incorrect use of design constraints.

Ability to diagnose abstraction-level design errors from analysis
of circuit-level measurements.

Appreciation of the significance of modularity and iterative
structure in digital design.

Appreciation of the significance of alternate abstraction-layer
design choices on the physical properties of resulting hardware.
Assessment Information
