Course descriptionThis module provides instruction in both the concept and application of electrochemical biosensors that act as self-contained integrated devices capable of providing analytical information, using a biological recognition element retained in direct spatial contact with an electrochemical transduction element. Instruction is also given in the general principles of sampling and analysis, statistical presentation and manipulation of data. This module serves as an introduction to some of the biosensors and electronic measurement techniques covered in the module BioSensors & Instrumentation.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course the students will understand the electronic and electrochemical principles of bioelectrodes, chemical sensors and bionsensors. They will gain practice in the general principles of sampling and analysis, statistical presentation and manipulation of data generated by biosensors. Students will gain practical knowledge of basic microfabrication techniques and cleanroom procedures. In addition they will be introduced to the health and safety issues involved in sensor fabrication and use including the regulatory environment. They will be familiar with the literature on biosensors, including up to date knowledge of the state of the art, and gain experience in the preparation and presentation of technical information.
