Course description | Through a detailed examination of a wide range of romance narratives, the course will study the types and varieties of medieval romance, its chronological development from the twelfth to the seventeenth centuries and its relationship to contemporary religious, social and political ideas. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will gain an understanding of the varieties of medieval romance, its chronological development from the 12th century through to the Renaissance, and its relationship to contemporary religious, social and political ideas. |
Assessment Information
One term essay (2500 words) (25%);
one take-away exam essay (3000 words)(75%). |
Special Arrangements
Numbers are limited, with priority given to students taking degrees involving English or Scottish Literature and Visiting Students placed by the Admissions Office. Students not in these categories need the written approval of the Head of English Literature before enrolling. In the case of excess applications places will be decided by ballot. |
