Course descriptionThis course is the third of four essential Family Medicine courses focused on building the skill base for Family Medicine practitioners working in rural poorly resourced regions.
This course will refresh students in the skills and essentials in the management of women's and children's health in a resource poor primary care setting; alongside building knowledge and core competencies in adult renal, metabolic problems and haematology.
The course will build a knowledge and skill base for effective identification and management of common paediatric problems in a systematic, problem orientated way.
Students will also cover common presenting illnesses in family medicine including diabetes, bleeding disorders and anaemia.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. Manage common presenting problems for women's health
2. Manage problems related to obesity and weight loss
3. Identify and manage diabetes
4. Assess and examine children and be able to describe the patterns of normal growth and development
5. Manage common paediatric problems and emergencies and be able to recognise the less common
6. Manage chronic disabilities in children
7. Use and interpret investigations appropriately
8. Discern which problems can be effectively managed in a district hospital setting
9. Refer to specialist care as appropriate
10. Counsel and support patients with chronic disease
11. Ensure follow-up and continuity of care for women and children

The course will be delivered through a series of 20 packaged lectures with accompanying workplans.

Study Pattern The course will be divided into sessions of two and one week blocks. Each session will contain written materials and presentations, accompanied by guided reading in the form of links to journal articles with problem-based learning questions. Discussion of the content and reading materials will be posted to an online forum, along with students' answers to the PBL questions.
Students will be expected to produce a clinical case critique as part of their final assessment.
