| Course description | The course is suitable for students who have successfully completed Introductory Arabic Language (IMES07001 or IMES07002) or Arabic 1a (IMES08026) courses at Edinburgh, or an equivalent level course elsewhere and have a good grasp of reading and writing the Arabic script, a fair command of basic grammar and syntax, including at least the past and the present tense of Form I verbs, and are able to conduct a simple conversation in Modern Standard Arabic. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Building upon skills acquired in Introductory Arabic Language or equivalent course, students will further develop their knowledge of both written and spoken Modern Standard Arabic.
2. Expanded knowledge of Arabic grammar, including verb forms, irregular verbs, and use of different tenses.
3. Extended vocabulary range.
4. Ability to write short compositions in Arabic.
5. Ability to conduct conversation on a wider range of everyday topics and to give short presentations in Arabic. |
Assessment Information
Coursework (tba in class) worth 10%
Mid-semester test worth 20%
Degree exam (May diet) worth 70%
All students take all elements of assessment including the examination.

Special Arrangements
No students on programmes owned by IMES will be admitted to this course.
Introductory Arabic Language 2 is not a sufficient pre-requisite for Arabic 2. Those who have successfully completed Arabic 1a (IMES08026) may join the course, but will no longer be able to carry on with Arabic 2.

The course is designed to expand upon students' existing knowledge of Arabic grammar and syntax and will aim to cover, but is not limited to, the following topics: broken plurals, comparatives/superlatives, the dual, irregular verbs, verb forms, and use of different tenses, including the future.
Progression through the grammar points will be done in conjunction with improving the students' reading skills and expanding their vocabulary by covering the topical units of the course book Mastering Arabic 1 (second half) and some selected topics from other sources.
Students will be introduced to basic composition in Arabic (short essay).
Students' oral skills will be developed in class exercises and presentations.
