Course descriptionThe course aims to introduce students to the history and some of the key doctrines and practices of the Twelver Shi'i faith, from the formative era of the faith in the tenth century AD to the Islamic Revolution in Iran. In the process students will also evaluate different approaches to the study of faith utilised to date. Aside from the opening, organisational meeting, the course is driven by student presentations on assigned topics and makes use of a growing body of primary-source material available in translation.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will become familiar with the growing body of material on Shi'ism, and Twelver Shi'ism in particular, including primary-source Shi'i legal and theological materials available in translation. Student presentations will also encourage development of organisational, analytical and presentational skills.
