| Course description | This course is a survey of current research in Neuroinformatics in Edinburgh, intended to introduce new students to the Neuroinformatics community and expose them to potential Neuroinformatics PhD research projects. Each week covers a different research area, led by a guest lecturer working in that area. |

Assessment Information
60% of the final mark is from a set of 3 research proposals. 40% is from a term paper about one of the research topics covered in the course.
Each proposal in this class represents a shorter version of a proposal that the student could submit for a novel and feasible PhD research topic, based on the research of one of the guest lecturers in the course. The assessment is thus geared towards evaluating the students' ability to formulate and express research ideas in neuroinformatics.
You should expect to spend approximately 120 hours on the coursework for this course. |

The set of topics covered in the course varies from semester to semester driven entirely by the research interests of the guest lecturers. Each lecturer presents a general overview of work in his or her field, followed by specific research questions of current interest. The students then discuss these research questions , do readings in the area, attend laboratory sessions, or work exercises of the lecturers choice. Then, in coordination with the lecturer and the course organizers, the students develop ideas for new research in the area, culminating in a set of assessed research proposals covering topics from the course.
