| Course description | This course seeks to develop knowledge of figurative language, particularly as it is manifest in texts of various kinds in the history of English. The course will provide an overview of classical rhetoric, and show how many of the practices identified by early philosophers are characteristic of the language of various types of discourse in the present day. The course has a further objective of introducing students to the place of figurativeness - particularly, though not exclusively, the place of metaphor and metonymy - in the field of cognitive linguistics.
