Course descriptionThis course aims to explore the main elements of national environmental law, focusing on different legal options adopted by countries within and outside the European Union ¿ in particular developing countries. The course will build upon the LLM course on International Environmental Law, and be complementary to that on European Environmental Law.

On the one hand, the course will discuss the role of national law in implementing international environmental law, with particular emphasis on the use of international guidelines and other soft law instruments by national legal drafters. On the other hand, it will familiarize students with legal drafting techniques and participatory methodologies in law development in the specific area of environmental protection and natural resource management. The specific themes to be addressed in the course may include environmental institutions and public participation, protected areas, environmental impact assessment, forest management, wildlife management, fisheries and aquaculture, water, mountain development and bioenergy.
