Course description | Focusing on clinical decision making and professional judgement, this course examines the organisational, legal and ethical contexts of practice. The integral relationship between clinical decision making and clinical leadership is critically examined alongside clinical risk and its management and case based ethical issues. Record keeping and case management are considered in the context of the quality agenda. All theoretical content is closely allied to, and illustrated by, practice based issues and evidence. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
THEORETICAL: On completion of the course students will:
* Have an understanding of what is meant theoretically by clinical decision making and professional judgement
* Be knowledgeable about the influences on clinical decision making in the real world of care
* Have acquired an understanding of clinical risk management
* Understand what is meant by leadership and clinical leadership in relation to professional judgement and clinical decision-making
* Have developed reflective skills on the above
PRACTICE:
* To have gained a critical awareness of the potential implications for patients and clients of the clinical decisions made
* To demonstrate an understanding of the role of all health care members of the multidisciplinary team in relation to judgments and decisions
* To be able to demonstrate with discernment how decision-making skills might be acquired and better utilised in the health care setting
* To have demonstrated reflective skills on the above |
