Course description | The programme provides thorough training and hands-on experience in enhanced practical skills required for employment as a biochemical scientist. The course will cover a range of techniques from recombinant protein overexpression and purification, followed by activity assays and biophysical characterisation. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, students will be able to:
Extract and purify recombinant protein from E. coli by affinity chromatography
Describe how and why differences in experimental conditions or available equipment will influence the experimental strategy and outcome
Identify the applicable methods required and design an appropriate strategy for biophysical characterisation of a biomolecule
Apply, or be able to explain the advantages and limitations of, a range of biophysical characterisation methods
Design, implement and analyse a straightforward enzyme assay
Describe the advantages and limitations of different methods for determining binding affinities
Have confidence in learning the operation of advanced instrumentation

Assessment Information
Two written assessments:
Design experimental strategy fo biophysical and activity characterisation of purified protein (40%)
Experimental write-up, in the form, of a paper of practicals in 1-8 (60%)
