Course descriptionThe aim of this course is to provide an introduction to the main problems in epistemology and metaphysics. These topics include: defining knowledge, the sources of knowledge, scepticism, the problem of induction, God's existence, truth, space and time, universals and particulars, causation, realism and antirealism.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
In lectures and small group tutorials, students will:

(i) acquire a solid understanding of the basic problems of epistemology and metaphysics (including: defining knowledge, the sources of knowledge, scepticism, the problem of induction, God's existence, truth, space and time, universals and particulars, causation, realism and anti-realism), and

(ii) acquire an understanding of the nature of philosophy and an appreciation of the value of characteristically philosophical ways of thinking.

1 1,500-word mid-term essay (worth 25%) and 1 exam at the end of the semester (worth 75%).
