Course descriptionThis core first year course introduces students to principles of management, organisational theory and organisational behaviour. Key management theories are used in the analysis of sport and recreation industry. The importance of good practice in the management and governance of sport and recreation has been highlighted in recent years in both the public and commercial sectors. Relations between participants, providers and other stakeholders in sport institutions and governing bodies are critically examined.
The demand for sport and recreation has been increasing over the last decade as it has been recognized as an area of growth and of economic, social and political importance management theories is systemically provided. The supply of sport and opportunities for physical recreation and activity has also increased
This course critically examines the management of human, physical and financial resources across different sport. It covers principles of management and examines organisational structures, including governance, key elements of organisational behavior and culture and organisational development within sport and recreation.
This course considers the implementation and evaluation of policies associated with sport and recreation management, in physical activity and health and well being. It focuses on applying theories to traditional and ccontemporary sport organisations to illustrate the ways in which sport policy is implemented. At the same time as there has been greater scrutiny of professional practice across all sports, academic interest and research in this field has also increased
Through this course, students will gain insight into theories and different practices of management which can be applied to the sport industry in both public and private sectors.
It will examine the differences and similarities in provision, planning and management in the sectors. The course also aims to build key personal study skills that will support academic progress and build professional management capabilities.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. LO1 Demonstrate an understanding of key management theories and principles and their application to a range of contemporary sport and recreation organisations
2. LO2 Critically evaluate organisational behaviour in sport and recreation organisations
3. LO3 Examine the role of leadership, governance and sound management policies and management practice in sport organisations
4. LO4 Critically analyse contemporary management issues in sport and recreation organisations and policy principles in the context of management processes in different sectors of sport and recreation
5. LO5 Demonstrate an understanding of the sources of funding for sport organisations and the impact on policy and planning

LO6 Demonstrate knowledge of the economic significance of sport and recreation and the inter-relationship between demand and supply in the mixed economy of sport provision

Study Pattern
Teaching and Learning will include lectures, seminars, group work, and student presentation and interactive on line tasks, including student generated material. A full course enables greater opportunity for formative assessment and feedback through seminar tasks which will include small group presentations on managing current issues in sport organisations in semester 1, report writing exercises in semester 2 and practise essay style answers for written exam questions in semester 2.
