SummaryThe course focuses on the convergence of audiovisual related issues and translation studies. It aims at:

* encouraging critical thinking on the relationships between words, images and translation;
* introducing central concepts of audiovisual approaches to translation;
* showing how these approaches could be implemented in terms of various translation strategies;
* broadening the students' perspectives on the constraints attached to the different types of AVT modes. After an introduction to the course and two lectures on the various AVT modes, from week four we will focus on the different AVT modes from the perspective of research: dubbing, subtitling (including subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing- SDH), voice over, and audiodescription.

This not a practice course, the students will not be working with software for e.g. subtitling or dubbing. The emphasis is on the translation process in different settings and how the various AVT modes can be researched.

Week 10: Presentations on essay topic.

From week 4 until week 8 students will be doing presentations. There will be three readings to choose from and depending on student numbers, two/three students will present on the topic of the week. E.g. in week 4 two or three students will do a 15-minutes presentation on subtitling research + 10 minutes for questions and discussion. The remainder of the session will be used to recap and reflect.

Week 9 will be used to reflect back on the course and in week 10 the students will present the topics they have chosen to work on for their final essays. These will take the form of poster presentations or if the student intake is low students could do individual PowerPoint presentations to the whole class.

There is no practical element in this option since it is research-oriented and there is no provision for teaching practical elements such as subtitling (including SDH), dubbing, AD or voice over. For the essay, students will choose an original AV material, such as a film, TV series, or documentary and investigate its translation (e.g. dubbed, subtitled or audiodescribed versions) drawing on AVT theories.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of theories and concepts in specific AVT areas
  2. Demonstrate a critical awareness of diverse AVT research issues, which intersect with other areas such as politics, power, gender, etc.
  3. Apply critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis to issues that are informed by recent developments in the subject
  4. Manage complex ethical and professional issues
  5. Present critical and creative work in different forms through individual presentation and group work
