SummaryThe aim of this course is to survey current research on bilingual first language development - the simultaneous learning of two (or more) languages in early childhood. It provides an overview of major empirical issues and findings concerning the phenomenon and their implications for acquisition research and linguistic theory.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. understand current issues in the research on bilingual first language development
  2. understand the relationship between a bilingual child's two languages
  3. understand the role of input in bilingual acquisition
  4. understand 'transfer' effects between the two languages
