SummaryThis course forms an introduction to the current theory and practice of both electroacoustic composition and performance. Its main interest is music which is composed using recorded source material as its basis, and which is more concerned with the organic rather than architectonic disposition of sound. Practical techniques for composing electroacoustic music will be established, including basic and more advanced sound processing.
Course description Teaching will be based one weekly two hour seminars.

Final submission (80%)
(made up of composition (50%) and report (30%))
Feedback Formative feedback will be provided in the form of small group studio tutorials ahead of each submission. Additionally, there will be a number of crit sessions with the whole class over the course, giving students the benefit of a wide range of critical and musical perspectives.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand the aesthetic background of electroacoustic music.
  2. Produce creative work in the electroacoustic medium.
  3. Acquire an overview of non real-time digital signal processing as it is used in electroacoustic composition.
  4. Gain an awareness of the use and limitations of composed space in electroacoustic composition.
  5. Understand electroacoustic music performance praxis, including an overview of the merits and demerits of the various common multi-channel formats currently available.
