SummaryArchitecture in Scotland has traditionally been studied within a British context, but it is increasingly evident that at all periods the people inhabiting Scotland have been creating buildings with influences from far beyond the island of Britain. The course will focus on how indigenous factors affecting Scotland's architecture have been modified by these international connections from the prehistoric period through the Dark and Middle Ages to the Renaissance up to the War of the Three Kingdoms in the middle seventeenth century, after which it becomes possible to speak of a British architecture.
