| Summary | This first stage of your studies in contemporary art introduces you to key concepts and approaches used in the study of visual culture. During your first year you will explore and apply a variety of critical approaches to analyse visual culture. Through a range of assignments you will test, apply and communicate your ideas in a clear, cogent manner.

| Course description |
This course introduces you to key concepts and approaches used in the study of visual and material culture as they relate to contemporary art. You will explore theories about how we read images and engage with the material world, you will be introduced to key historical and contemporary artists and theorists who have contributed to these philosophies, as well as the place of visual and material culture studies in Euroamerican art school curriculum.

Relationship between Assessment and Learning Outcomes:
The literature review will require you to amass appropriate textual and image based research resources, upon which you will receive feedback in Week 7. This will form a solid basis for you to build your final essay, which will assess your ability to read and analyse texts, images and objects in contemporary art. |
