| Summary | This course is only available to ECA students on degree programmes belonging to the School of Art.
This course will develop an enhanced understanding of methods of information gathering, the collation and editing of visual resources appropriate to your specialism. Drawing upon a focused body of resources and visual material you will refine a personal perspective in relation to your own work. Research methods and methodologies may include drawing, photography, models, notebooks and research into technical and conceptual processes.
Aims
1.To engage critically in specialist visual research in relation to art practice.
2.To consolidate and enhance an understanding of research that underpins projects and self initiated studio practice.
3.To test and evaluate materials, methods and processes in the refining of a personal visual language.

Assessment is formative at end of Semester 1 and summative at end of Semester 2.
Research report- This report should detail at least two bodies of work. It should articulate how an artwork has been arrived at. How did you start? What did you look at? What processes did you use? What context are you working in? What are your methods? The report is therefore a synthesis of what you looked at. It could include sections from notebooks, your own writing (descriptive and reflective) It is not everything that you looked at during a semester but what you looked at in relation to a work you completed. It is the narrative (both visual and textual) of a body of work. You will need 2 of these reports and the word count for each is 600 words. Useful formats for the presentation of these reports could be illustrator (its great for combining word and image, or VUE (downloadable from Tufts University) which is particularly good for integrating digital resources. Equally this report could be paper collage and hand written text. The format should be chosen to reflect your working processes.
