SummaryThe fields of science communication and public engagement have undergone rapid development in the last decade and public engagement is emerging as an area of academic scholarship, grounded in practice. We will explore the key principles of effective engagement and consider evaluation methodologies and their role in the enhancement of quality public engagement. Personal attributes and the value of reflective practice will be explored and discussed using contextual examples. In the context of science communication, this course will explore, both theoretically and experientially, effective use of the following: different learning styles, use of voice and body language, interactive activities.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. To develop an understanding of guiding principles in science communication and public engagement.
  2. To develop an understanding of the evaluation process and its role in enhancing quality in public engagement.
  3. To develop an ethos of reflective practice, transferable across all aspects of the course.
  4. To develop skills and confidence in presenting science/issues to a variety of audiences using different formats and methodologies.
