Course description Academic Description:
This honours course aims to consolidate reading of New Testament Greek, to enrich experience of textual criticism and exegesis of the Greek New Testament. It is aimed at those who have taken an introductory New Testament Greek course, such as BIST08014.

Syllabus/Outline Content:
The course is structured around a number of New Testament texts. These vary each year, but a possible curriculum might be the following: John 1-3, Mark 14-16, Matthew 1-2, Philipppians.

Student Learning Experience Information:
The course meets once a week over the whole year for a two-hourly block (with a break in the middle). We shall work through the set passage, verse by verse, paying attention to vocabulary, grammar and exegetical matters. Students are encouraged to ask questions and to share what they have read in commentaries with the rest of the class. Participants will demonstrate their achievement of the intended learning outcomes through the class test (at the end of the first semester), an exegetical essay, and the final exam.

Co-requisites
Prohibited Combinations Students MUST NOT also be taking Intermediate New Testament Greek (BIST08018)

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a good reading ability in New Testament Greek.
  2. Show an acquaintance with the major tools of Greek exegesis: grammars, lexica, and concordances.
  3. Write a short exegetical essay on one passage from the Greek New Testament, outlining the most significant points of linguistic and theological interest.
  4. Show an ability to navigate the textual apparatus of modern Greek New Testament editions.
