SummaryThe sustainability of the built environment is an increasingly important yet complex issue. The demand for sustainability is seen from clients, governments and the general population. The topic is inherently present in most other aspects of the delivery of the built environment such as design, materials and construction. This course will deliver an understanding of sustainability from what is known as the "Triple Bottom Line" that is from social, technical and environmental points of view.

Students will further their understanding of how engineering can help mitigate the negative consequences of sustainability issues by undertaking in depth case studies of chosen topics in groups. The course culminates in a poster conference of the group findings.
Course description Lecture topics (content varies year to year):
- Introduction and sustainability issues in engineering
- History of Sustainability
- Environmental sustainability
- Life Cycle Assessment
- Sustainability in Civil Engineering
- Guest lectures: topics vary on availability but include Whole Life Cycle; Protecting Natural Heritage; Sustainability in Development
- Bibliographic Research Skills

Students also undertake an intensive, group based case study analysis of a sustainability topic of their choosing. This is assessed first through an Annotated Bibliography (30%) then by a group presentation of their findings (70%)
