SummaryResearch Methods in Film Studies 1 will introduce students to the basics of academic film analysis, writing and research.
Course description Research Methods in Film Studies 1 will begin with a general introduction to academic research at postgraduate level before presenting some of the major approaches to film analysis. The course will introduce students to the practice of writing academically about cinema as well as discussing practical methods of engaging with the study of individual films. The course will introduce the large number of film-related research resources within the university and in Edinburgh at large. We will also consider how to use the many online film databases to support research.

Research Methods in Film Studies 1 will ensure that all students are familiar with the basic academic practices of referencing and formatting bibliographies and filmographies.

If a student fails a component, then each assignment will be given a numerical mark and the average used to determine whether a pass mark has been achieved.

1. A formatted bibliography and filmography (20 items in each) (50%)
2. Review of a scholarly work's research methods (800 words) (50%)
Feedback 1. Students will submit a first draft of their bibliography and filmography via Grademark, be given feedback, and then asked to submit a final version.
2. Students will be given feedback on the quality of their article review via Grademark.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Use and organise a number of research technologies, including online resources and databases.
  2. Identify specific technical problems in the study of film and cinema, including problems of historical method, theoretical approach and audio-visual analysis.
  3. Produce a formatted scholarly bibliography and filmography.
  4. Produce a critical review of the research methods employed in a scholarly article or monograph.
