| Summary | IPT is an evidence-based safe and effective therapy for depression and related disorders in adolescents and adults. This course will focus on the development of clinical skills through practice and clinical supervision. Students will develop therapeutic skills specific to Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) through a supervised placement and regular contact days with the university. At the end of the course, students will be qualified to practice IPT as a practitioner (Level B). The course forms part of the MSc in Psychological Therapies and students have a range of options for continuing their studies on completion of this course. Due to the practice-based elements and supervision requirements of this course, the course is delivered over one year.
As part of a NES-funded initiative, supervision capacity is being developed in Scotland. The reduced quota in the first two years recognises the short-term limited capacity.

| Course description |
The course provides supervised practice of IPT in line with IPT-UK Level B requirements. Through a combination of placement-based supervision, clinical practice, independent study and university/online-based contact days where workshops and groups supervision will be used, students will develop proficiency in assessing, formulating and intervening with psychological difficulties using Interpersonal Psychotherapy.
Participants are required to have access to a minimum of four completed clinical cases for the duration of the course which are suitable for the purposes of training in IPT, and with whom the student is undertaking IPT interventions. Participants should aim to work with clients presenting with moderate to severe depression, two of which will be presented as a formal case studies at the end of the course. Cases presented at the end of the course must be cases for which the student received supervision from the course-approved supervisors and in which they directly administered treatment. The student will also provide taped evidence of clinical work which will be submitted alongside a further case report, and used in clinical supervision.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Be proficient in conducting a thorough psychological assessment of psychological difficulties via the use of self/parental/other report, observations and interview methods.
- Demonstrate a critical awareness of and proficiency in conceptualising and formulating an individual's clinical presentation in an interpersonal perspective.
- Demonstrate a critical awareness of, and proficiency in the application of the most commonly used techniques associated with IPT.
- Demonstrate expanded and reflective knowledge and skills of interpersonal psychotherapy.
