SummaryAims:
. To introduce students to the range of materials available in implantology.
. To promote an understanding of the concepts of "biocompatibility" in relation to dental implantology and the clinical significance of this.
. To promote understanding of bony anatomy and physiology in relation to dental implants.

Objectives:
At the end of this module students should be able to:
. Critically appraise different implant systems and select a system that will meet their clinical requirements.
. Critically analyse literature in biomaterials relevant to dental implants.
. Anatomy of the mouth and jaws, the normal variations that commonly present and the changes that occur with age and as a consequence of tooth loss
. Bone physiology and wound healing
. The effects of the patient's general condition on bone anatomy and physiology and significance for patients undergoing treatment with dental implants
. The effect of local bone quality on implant treatment and outcomes

Topics to be covered include
1. What is Osteointegration
2. Concept of bioactive and bioinert materials
3. Choice of implant system/materials
4. Guided bone regeneration and membranes
5. Natural v artificial bone substitutes
6. Hard tissues - pathology, anatomy, calcium homeostasis
7. Soft tissues - nerve injury - health/disease
8. Anatomy revision demonstration
