SummaryThis post-introductory course is intended for students who have successfully completed Foundation Spanish Language 1 or have reached an equivalent standard (Standard Grade/GCSE). It is not suitable for absolute beginners or students with knowledge of Spanish at Highers/A-level or above.

This course runs both in semester 1 and semester 2.

All students take all elements of assessment, including the examination.
Course description Foundation Spanish Language 2 is the follow-up to the 40 hour Foundation Spanish Language 1. Students who have successfully completed Foundation Spanish Language 1 or have an equivalent knowledge (e.g. GCSE or Standard Grade) in the language will be ideally suited for this course. This course is not suitable for students who have Highers, A-Level, or knowledge above CEFR level A1. At the end of the course students should have reached approximately CEFR level A2/1. Students wishing to continue learning Spanish will be eligible to join Foundation Spanish Language 3 (ELCH07017)or Spanish 1B ELCH08002 (provided that you have passed the course with a minimum of 70%) in the next academic year.

Pre-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed Foundation Spanish Language 1 (ELCH07011)

Prohibited Combinations Other requirements If not taken Foundation Spanish 1: Spanish at Standard Grade (SCE)/GCSE, or equivalent evidence of proficiency.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. To distinguish similarities and differences in terms of cultural festivities and simple social interactions/exchanges (e.g. restaurants or telephone conversations).
  2. To read and understand simple descriptive texts and everyday conversations on topics such as the environment, local festivities, past/present activities and to identify basic linguistic varies of the target language in terms of accents and vocabulary.
  3. To write personal letters and short opinions on films and current affairs in simple descriptive texts using an appropriate register.
  4. To develop further resources to become an effective language learner such as the use of authentic material (TV and radio programmes, contact with native speakers, film in the original language).
  5. To develop critical skills to ensure the use of reliable language resources both printed and/or digital (e.g. bilingual dictionaries, grammar books, translation tools).

DELC students may only take this course if it over and above their full credit load, as a non credit bearing course. Visiting Students may only take this course for credits.

Please note that auditing this course is not allowed. You must be enrolled as CE (Class and Assessment including centrally arranged exam).
