SummaryThe course will aim to explore the emergence of Scandinavian as a separate branch of Germanic, and explain the development of the three modern mainland Scandinavian languages; Danish, Norwegian and Swedish.
Course description From Indo-European to Proto-Scandinavian: The Germanic languages

The Syncope Period (450-750): Sources; The Linguistic revolution

Common Scandinavian (750-1050): The runes; The Scandinavian expansion

Old Scandinavian (1050-1350): The Latin alphabet; Old Norse

Middle Scandinavian (1350-1550): Danish innovations; Influence from Middle Low German

The impact of the Reformation

Modern Swedish and Danish

The two standards of Norwegian

Scandinavian after WWII: Loanwords from English; Intercommunication in Scandinavia

Learning Outcomes
* Develop an awareness of the nature and limits of the evidence for this field of study.
* Develop an understanding of some fundamental theories of historical linguistic.
* Develop the ability to engage critically with received assumptions and scholarly models.
* Demonstrate by way of essay and participation in class specialist knowledge and understanding of the making of the three mainland Scandinavian languages.
