| Summary | The course is designed to enhance your knowledge of specialist academic vocabulary and your skills of academic presentation (in both written and spoken modes) so that you are able to participate successfully in Year 2 undergraduate courses.
The course consists of four strands: Scientific Writing, Research and Referencing, Vocabularies of Science , Writing a Critical Review, and Presentation Skills.
Please note: this course is for CSE Global Select Pathway students only. Global Select EAP 2 forms part of the CSE Global Select Pathway Programme, which is intended to provide non-native speaker pre-undergraduate students with the necessary cognitive, linguistic and cultural knowledge/skills to join Year 2 of a CSE undergraduate programme of study.

| Course description |
The course is designed to enhance your knowledge of specialist academic vocabulary and your skills of academic presentation (in both written and spoken modes) so that you are able to participate successfully in Year 2 undergraduate courses.
The course consists of four strands: Scientific Writing, Research and Referencing, Vocabularies of Science , Writing a Critical Review, and Presentation Skills.
- "Scientific Writing" focuses on the basic IMRAD structure of academic reports (Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion), the use of appropriate language (e.g. passive and nominalisation) as well as graphs/tables, numbers and abbreviations.
- "Research and Referencing" introduces academic conventions of citation, use of supporting evidence and argument, acknowledgment of sources (to prevent plagiarism), forms of citation and bibliographic documentation.
- "Vocabularies of Science" continues from Semester 1. You work together with other students, identifying and analysing new technical lexis in your School readings. Vocabulary development activities include the use of software allowing you to analyse texts into general, academic and specialist/technical lexis.
- "Writing a Critical Review" introduces the critical review genre and prepares you for writing a comparative critical review on two academic journal articles.
- In the "Presentation Skills" sessions you will practise the key sub-skills required to give effective oral presentations: structuring; introducing the presentation; emphasis and phrasing; using visual aids; concluding; and handling questions. You will have many opportunities throughout the course to deliver practice presentations, before giving your assessed individual presentation in the final two weeks of the course.

Classes run three times a week at Paterson's Land, Holyrood Road.

(1) A critical review of two academic journal articles - weighted at 60%,
(2) A ten-minute academic oral presentation on a scientific topic of your choice - weighted at 40%.
To pass, students must achieve a minimum of 40% in the combined mark (and a minimum of 30% in each component).

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Recognise and use the overall structure, referencing and citation patterns, and linguistic characteristics of scientific written reports
- Understand and apply specialist vocabulary encountered in Semester 2 readings for CSE School core and option courses
- Write a comparative critical review, including introduction, summary, evaluation and conclusion sections
- Prepare and deliver an effective academic presentation
