SummaryFoundation English for Academic Purposes (FEAP) 2 is designed to improve your academic English knowledge and skills to the point where you can participate effectively in undergraduate courses in the Humanities or Social Science. The course will focus on the development of your critical thinking, reading and writing skills, and also your oral presentation skills.

Together these two strands complement the work done in Foundation English for Academic Purposes 1 on academic reading, writing and vocabulary, to provide you with the tools required for effective undergraduate study.

This course is for students on the HSS International Foundation Programme only. It is not available to undergraduate or postgraduate students.



Course description FEAP2 Critical thinking, reading and writing sessions will begin by introducing you to what it means to be critical. You will then be introduced to two academic journal articles, which week by week, you will analyse in detail, working towards the writing of a practice comparative critical review of the two articles. Once introduced to the nature and structure of the comparative critical review as an academic genre, you will submit a section of the practice review each week, receiving feedback on each section. You will learn how to write an effective introduction, succinct summaries, effective critical evaluations and strong conclusions. By the end of the course you will have built up an entire practice comparative review, the intention being that this will assist you in writing the final assessed review, which will be on two different academic journal articles.

Oral presentation skills classes will help you enhance your skills in giving effective academic presentations. Topics covered will include: structuring your presentation; speaking in an appropriate style; using phrasing and emphasis; constructing effective introductions and conclusions; using visual aids and making your presentation interesting.

You will attend FEAP2 classes twice a week. One class per week will focus on critical thinking, reading and writing and the other will focus on oral presentation skills.

Additional Information (Assessment) This course will be assessed by three components.

1.The five written sections of the practice critical review - introduction, summary of article one, summary of article two, critical evaluation of both articles, conclusion - weighted at 15% in total (3% for each section).
2. A comparative critical review of two academic journal articles - weighted at 50%.
3. A ten-minute academic oral presentation - weighted at 35%.

To pass, students must achieve a minimum of 40% in the combined mark (and a minimum of 30% in each assessment component).

You will also give a practice presentation (formative only) about half way through the course, to help you prepare for the final presentation.
Feedback You will be given general oral or written feedback on the written sections of the practice critical reviewm individual written feedback - via GradeMark - on the full practice critical review and individual written formative feedback on the practice oral presentation you give, with a view to helping you improve before you give your final oral presentation.

You will have a chance to discuss all feedback given with your tutor during class time.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand the role of critical thinking in the British university context
  2. Understand and critically analyse arguments in academic texts, evaluating their strengths and weaknesses
  3. Write a comparative critical review on two academic journal articles, including effective introduction, summary, critical evaluation and conclusion sections
  4. Learn how to structure and deliver an effective academic presentation in English
