SummaryThis course will allow students to develop a deeper level of knowledge and understanding in Haematology, including haematological malignancy and clotting disorders. Individual speciality tutors will use increasingly complex clinical case studies to broaden knowledge. They will guide students to appropriate seminal publications in their speciality and encourage them to present and review recent journal article in a group setting (online journal club)(e.g using Blackboard Collaborate). On-line publication review forms will also be used to assess of literature evaluation skills. Historically important, controversial, topical and novel papers will be discussed.
Students writing skills will also be enhanced through the summative assessments (a case report or review article), which should contain an appropriate review of the literature in their specialist area. Students will be encouraged to publish these pieces of work where possible.

Additional Information (Assessment) Formal summative written assessment (a case report or specialist review article)- will constitute 80% of the student's grade. Online assessment will incorporate a variety of activities participation in discussion groups/ wikis, online presentation/ review of journal articles, submission of literature appraisal forms etc. will constitute (20%) of the overall course grade and is taken to represent a formative assessment of learning throughout the programme (more details in programme proposal document).

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand and recognise the link between Haematology and systemati disease.
  2. Understand and describe the mechanisms underpinning the development of Haematological malignancies.
  3. Recognise and formulate management plans for the treatment of Haematological malignancies.
  4. Understand and explain the fundamentals of the clotting cascade.
  5. Understand the risks associated with transfusion and recognise transfusion associated reactions.
