| Course description |
This course gives students on the MScR Collections and Curatorial Practices the opportunity to work with a group of peers on a real project in a major cultural institution in Edinburgh, such as the National Museum of Scotland, National Library of Scotland and National Galleries of Scotland, The Fruitmarket Gallery, Talbot Rice Gallery and University of Edinburgh Collections. The 60-credit course runs over two semesters and will demand professional-level skills and interaction with the staff in the relevant institution. Projects will vary from year to year according to the needs of partner organisations. Research and development work will vary but may include delivery of exhibitions, audience development or public engagement programmes, and collection management. Initial training and induction will be given, but students will work with a high degree of autonomy to ensure that the research project is delivered on time and successfully. Assessment will be by self-assesment reports and a final group presentation.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research relating to professional curatorial practices, including organizational structures and standards in a national cultural institution;
- Develop original and creative responses to problems and issues presented by a specific research project context;
- Plan and manage a programme of research relating to practical activity, informed by knowledge of professional standards in curatorial practice;
- Work as part of a team to deliver research project outcomes professionally and on time;
- Communicate assessment of personal progress and skills development and relate this to a group working context.

Learning Resources
| The learning resources for each Guided Research Placement will include the staff expertise, management infrastructure, collections data, and library and archive of the relevant institution. In addition, there will be induction training in the relevant institution and an induction day on the specific project. Students will be able to make use of expertise in curatorial and other programmes among the staff of Edinburgh College of Art and relevant staff in The University Collections team and Talbot Rice Gallery team. |
