|Summary||This course examines the most controversial event in modern Spanish history, the Civil War of 1936 to 1939. It will consider the origins of the war before studying the main military, political, diplomatic, socio-economic and cultural developments of the conflict. Undergraduates will have access to the wide range of published and unpublished primary source materials.
The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) has long fascinated scholars and students alike. To many contemporaries, Spain appeared to be a battleground between democracy, communism and fascism. While this course will recognise the importance of foreign intervention (and non-intervention), it will stress that the conflict was primarily a domestic battle between competing visions of 'Spain'. The course will study the origins of the civil war, rejecting simplistic explanations of an inevitable clash between the 'Two Spains'. It will then examine the military rebellion of July 1936 and the main military, political, socio-economic and cultural developments of the civil war before General Franco's unconditional victory in April 1939.
