SummarySince the age of European colonial rule in the Middle East came to an end around the Second World War, nominally independent nation-states in the Middle East have tried to negotiate the opportunities and challenges of the Cold War, regional conflict and co-operation, underdevelopment, and more recently, globalisation. This course takes up the study of this rich politics through addressing a number of key issues: state-building, pan-Arabism, Islamic revivalism, informal politics, popular protests, and the dialectic relationship between liberalisation and authoritarianism.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Identify the main trends and issues in post-1945 Middle East politics.
  2. Critically evaluate methods and approaches used in this field by historians and political scientists.
  3. Contextualise current developments in the region with regard to their historical context, and to analyse them through the appropriate conceptual tools.
  4. Conduct systematic research in secondary and primary sources, and to explain the successive steps of that research.
