SummaryThe course aims to cover the period from the formative era of Islam to the early twentieth century, in the process introducing students to key issues and figures in the field of the history of Islamicate medicine and science. Aside from the opening, organisational meeting, the course is driven by student presentations on assigned topics and makes use of a growing body of primary-source material available in translation.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. identify and describe key tendencies, such as the Prophetic and Galenic traditions, and important figures in the history of Islamic medicine and science from the formative era of Islam to the early twentieth century.
  2. challenge conventional discussions of topics in Islamic medicine and science ¿ e.g. human dissection, surgery, contagion and the black death and ¿modern¿ medical practice - in the extant secondary literature.
  3. incorporate translated primary source materials into their analyses.
  4. present structured arguments in both oral and a variety of written formats.
  5. offer a more advanced discussion and critique, based on further use of primary sources materials, of the extant dichotomous discussion of Islamic science and medicine.
