SummaryThe aims and objectives of the course are to impart to students an understanding of the core principles of competition law most relevant to the regulation of innovation. The course builds on undergraduate knowledge of competition law by focusing in-depth on national (UK but also comparative, especially US) and EU regulation of innovative markets. The course will therefore consider, primarily, the application of the concepts and legal principles of competition law relevant to dominant position, joint ventures, mergers, monopolies and technology transfer (i.e. building the foundations for advanced study of recent case law involving BSkyB/News Corp, IBM, Intel, Microsoft etc in semester two).

Learning Outcomes
The course aims to consolidate and deepen skills acquired through the study of competition law at undergraduate level, including: expression, argumentation, problem-solving and debate, via seminar participation; independently producing written research of postgraduate standard which displays critical understanding, sound analysis and independence of mind, clear and succinct expression of ideas, the ability to pursue an argument with proper care, and attention to academic literature; in preparing for seminars and essays, to synthesise material from a broad variety of research sources; development of research skills: using the library, relevant databases and appropriate use of Internet resources.
