SummaryThis course will focus principally on the political economy and regulation of the Eurozone. The course will examine the economic principles that inform the construction of common currency areas and offer a critical perspective on the Eurozone against those principles. Particular attention will be given to understanding the fiscal policy implications of common currency areas, and offering a critical analysis of the fiscal policy obligations attached to membership of the Eurozone. The course will also consider the role and functions of the European Central Bank.

Course description A key aim of the course is to review the causes and consequences of the financial and economic crisis that engulfed the global economy in 20087-8, and the impact this had on the Eurozone. In particular we will examine the nature of the sovereign debt crisis, and the policy changes implemented to address that crisis. Finally the course will review the regulatory lessons learned from this episode and consider the adequacy of the regulatory responses in (and beyond) the Eurozone.
