An introduction to the generic and specialised skills required to:
- carry out research in the mathematical sciences, particularly in the topic of Analysis and its Applications
- move into a career in industry or academia.
- Lectures, workshops and computer classes given by subject specialists and central training programmes at both the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University.

Learning Outcomes
On a subject specialist level, students should be able to do most of the followng: ¿ manage and make effective use of their time with the supervisors of the taster, extended and full PhD projects ¿ get the most out of seminars and specialised talks ¿ use research publication bibliographic databases ¿ use appropriate mathematical software for both writing and computation ¿ understand the elements of report writing and use them to construct a report ¿ understand the elements of giving a research presentation and give such presentations ¿ understand the research publications process ¿ understand how to function as a teaching assistant and how to mark mathematical tests and homework ¿ understand the ethical issues involved in mathematical sciences research and teaching, including plagiarism ¿ plan and budget small events such as visiting speakers and small workshops/conferences ¿ appreciate their future career options
