This extended project involves a substantial piece of individual research under the direction of a member of staff. Students will give an oral progress report presentation in May and the final submission of the written report is at the end of July. This course requires independent research guided by regular meetings with an academic supervisor.

The topic should be in the area of mathematical analysis and its applications and be different from that chosen in the earlier Taster Project. The topic of this project can be entirely different from that of the eventual full PhD project, or it can lead straight into it. The supervisor of this project need not be the eventual supervisor of the full PhD project.

¿ work independently researching a mathematical topic
¿ investigate a topic in the general area of analysis and its applications in sufficient depth to show appreciation of the most up to date research
¿ search independently for information in appropriate sources
¿ understand what plagiarism is and how to reference material properly
¿ give an oral progress report
¿ write a properly structured report that: explains the research in the project; indicates the importance of the research topic; shows an appreciation of its broader context and significance in the mathematical sciences
