SummaryQuantitative research - generally involving detailed statistical analysis of large amounts of data - is increasingly important in medical education. However, medical educators frequently lack the background necessary to evaluate research using such data or to apply such techniques in their own work. This course is designed to provide educators with the necessary skills to understand quantitative research and apply it in their host institutions.

The practical involves a sample dataset. This must be analysed with regards to a series of key areas (such as the likely conclusions, the impact of the findings, and the magnitude of the effects). Students will consider potential follow ups and will be evaluated on the quality of their script and the acceptability of their analytical strategy.

The review involves examining three papers that have used quantitative statistical methods. You will review them, examine the plausibility of the conclusions, discuss the appropriateness of the methods and suggest potential follow ups.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Review and evaluate the factors that need to be taken into account before and during quantitative research
  2. Critically examine the range of methods available and select appropriate tools depending on circumstances
  3. Communicate key findings to non-specialists
  4. Evaluate the real world impact of quantitative research
  5. Develop the ability to run analyses using the statistics package R
