SummaryThis course embraces the analysis and imitation of a number of historical styles of composition, particularly 16th-century counterpoint, Baroque fugue and early Romantic song and string quartet writing.
Course description While primarily concerned with learning technical skills, creativity in finding appropriate solutions will also be encouraged. Students will be asked to carry out compositional exercises in various styles, using the works of past composers as models. The course builds on and deepens the knowledge and skills imparted in Composition 1. Particular attention will be given to fugal writing and to the chromatic harmony used in the early nineteenth century.

Pre-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed Composition 1 (MUSI08067)

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should have at least one semester in Music Theory and one semester in Composition. We will only consider University/College level courses.

Additional Information (Assessment) A portfolio of two pieces of work (50%); a take-away examination (25%) and a 2-hour degree examination (25%) both held in the December Exam Diet.
Feedback Students will receive formative feedback throughout the semester in weekly tutorials. Weekly exercises are set by the course lecturer, submitted by the student and marked by tutors ahead of tutorials, with suggestions for improvement. They will be discussed, with verbal feedback from both tutor and fellow students, in tutorials.
The lectures will include practice sessions on doing assignments.
Summative feedback will be given on submitted portfolios.
Students will also be provided with the opportunity to view examination scripts in a specially-arranged session.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Engage with a variety of musical styles through technical exercises and projects
  2. Have acquired the technical skills necessary to reproduce a number of past musical styles, particularly those of Palestrina, J.S. Bach, Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn.
  3. Have developed an understanding of the relationship between words and music in the compositions of Palestrina and of early Romantic song writers.
  4. Have analysed and understood the compositional processes involved in Baroque Fugues.
