Course description |
The course is designed to familiarise, and actively engage undergraduate students with the history and historiography of British military nursing but with a particular emphasis on the professional and political developments of military nursing in World War One. The 1914-1919 war was a watershed in civilian and military nursing practice and professional development therefore a large component of the course will focus on:
A. Personal consequences of nursing in WW1; sickness, death, disability, mental health issues. Working in hostile environments and extreme climatic conditions. Adjuncts to good mental and physical health for nurses on 'active service' will also be explored and discussed.
B. Professional development and practice examines the role of the nurse in pioneering war time trauma care, infection control, rehabilitation, multi-culture and multi-faith health care delivery, war psychiatry and psychological conditions. Innovative practice and adjuncts to care and rehabilitation such as painting, poetry, music, stitch work, humour and animals.
C. Political aspirations such as the Nurse Registration Bill and Act, and the establishment of the College of Nursing, now the Royal College of Nursing (RCN).
Knowledge of military medicine and nursing will be enhanced by a visit to the Royal College of Surgeons Military Medicine Collection and a guest lecture from a serving member of the Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps (QARANC).
