SummaryThis course is primarily focused on social cost-benefit analysis (a tool that is commonly used within the appraisal of environmental, social, and international development projects). Accordingly, this course covers the following topics: supplementary project appraisal tools such as the logical framework, the background theory to CBA, the use of market-based costs and benefits in CBA, the assessment of non-market benefits and costs (with a focus on environmental features and human health), discounting, CBA decision criteria, and sensitivity analysis. Examples are presented from both developed countries and developing countries. There is a practical exercise in which students complete a mini-CBA, and an essay in which students critical appraise elements of a CBA conducted in the context of international development projects. Weekly optional tutorial will also be held to further assist student learning.
