|Summary||This course introduces students to a range of specialist techniques used in psychological research. Topics include some or all of: single case neuropsychological studies, family and twin studies, eye-tracking, EEG, fMRI, and transcranial magnetic stimulation. Students will have a choice of topics.
This course will cover a variety of specialist techniques for data collection and/or quantitative data analysis that are used in different areas of contemporary psychological research. It will cover the advantages and disadvantages of these, considering the sorts of research questions to which each might be applied, and provide basic instruction in using them. Teaching will be in the form of lectures, seminar-style workshops and lab classes.
At a minimum, for each technique covered, you should get a good overview of the sorts of research question that a given technique is suited to addressing, the sorts of data that it yields, and how those data are dealt with, and the main advantages and limitations of the technique.
Core topics will comprise the student's choice of 6 lectures, or 5 lectures plus a lab class. Signup for the lab classes is on Learn (subject to availability).

||Assessment on this course is by a series of short answer questions organised in sections. Students will choose ONE section. Each section will relate to more than one of the techniques covered. The word limit will be 1500 words.
||Each topic provides separate opportunities for interactive discussion and feedback allowing students to assess and improve their understanding of the topic - for example, seminar-style workshops or data processing classes in which principles are applied to examples.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- understand how the research question affects the choice of technique
- familiarise themselves with the scenarios in which the range of design types discussed are applicable
- become adept at describing the major data collection and processing procedures in a variety of the areas covered
