SummaryBrain Imaging in Cognitive Neuroscience introduces the student to a range of applications of brain imaging techniques. The course critically examines the application of these techniques in health and disease, and the interpretation of their findings. Students are invited to become expert and critical readers of cognitive and clinical brain imaging papers.
Course description This team taught course introduces brain imaging and complementary techniques in the context of applications to the understanding of cognitive functions and dysfunctions. The methods range from functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography to electroencephalography and event-related potentials. Teaching is in a lecture format and provided by imaging specialists within the HCN team and by external lecturers, with the following exemplar topics (exact topics will vary year by year depending on staff availability):
1. Episodic memory in the young and the ageing brain
2. Language and language disorders with ERPs and fMRI
3. Converging studies of consciousness with fMRI and TMS
4. Brain imaging and lesion studies of semantic memory
5. Structural and functional brain imaging in neurodegeneration

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. know how brain imaging (EEG/ERPs, fMRI, sMRI, PET) is used to study normal and impaired cognition
  2. understand the main limitations of these applications and how these can be offset using complementary research methods
  3. evaluate current research in key domains of cognitive neuroscience
  4. read brain imaging papers critically
