SummaryA review of the principal determinants of human reproductive behaviour and its social implications. Topics will include: The Essentials of Demography: ?Vital Statistics?; The Demographic Transition in Europe: a Reproductive Revolution?; Low and ?Lowest?low? Fertility in Europe; ?Population ageing?: threat or promise?; Does Scotland face a demographic crisis?; Demography, Sociology and Eugenics; States Power and Population Policies.

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should have at least 2 social science courses (such as Sociology, Politics, Social Policy, Social Anthropology, etc) at grade B or above. We will only consider University/College level courses

Learning Outcomes
a) What the relationship is between sociology and demography both in terms of their theroetica approach and their institutional development as separate academic disciplines.

b) How the Theory of the Demographic Transition in Europe developed and what criticisms may be made of it.

c) The history through to the present day of fertility in in Europe, how this may be explained in sociological terms, and how demographers viewed it in the past

d) Trends in world population and its future prospects, such as 'population ageing'.

e) The theory of the reproductive revolution and the relationship between demography and changes in gender relations.
