Summary | The course considers the city as an aesthetic object: as an object in itself, in architectural and urban theory, and in representations in art and film. It is structured as broadly chronological history from 1960 to the present day. Western Europe and the United States are the main foci of attention. Key questions are: what are the main ideas that inform the way cities look during this period? How was the city represented in the visual arts? What new urban institutions were created in the period, and how have they informed the development of the city as an aesthetic object? Key moments in this history include: the inauguration of Brasilia in 1960; the critique of the modernist city by Jane Jacobs; Los Angeles in the writings of Reyner Banham; 'postmodernism' in architecture and urban form; culture-led urban regeneration in contemporary London. The course is interdisciplinary, making use of source material from the fields of art criticism, art history, architecture, urban theory, and film studies. No previous knowledge of these fields is required. The course is primarily taught through image and texts available through university resources, but there will be a number of visits to sites in Edinburgh and Glasgow. |
