Credit level (Normal year taken)SCQF Level 11 (Postgraduate)
Course typeOnline Distance Learning AvailabilityAvailable to all students
SCQF Credits10 ECTS Credits5
SummaryThis course will give students a good understanding of the role of wildlife host social systems, demography and behaviour and how they influence rates and routes of intra- and inter-specific disease transmission. The course will explore how these factors can affect the efficacy of, and thus inform future, disease surveillance and control
Course description Introduction to the concepts of:
Wildlife ecology: population demography and structure and disease persistence and prevalence
Wildlife population management and disease prevalence (including the perturbation effect)
Role of individual hosts and host communities in maintaining disease
Host roles in disease systems and the evidence required to identify a wildlife reservoir
Principles of modelling disease dynamics and management scenarios for wildlife
Definitions of host roles in disease systems and the evidence required to identify a wildlife reservoir
Wildlife population monitoring and disease surveillance
