SummaryTo develop a critical understanding of the complexity of urban and housing design and development, including the importance of people and process.
To develop detailed professional knowledge about urban design principles and practice, including sustainability issues.
Develop a critical understanding of the development process, stages in the process and the roles of the key actors including the client.
To apply detailed knowledge of planning policy, law, design and implementation to the quantitative and qualitative assessment of the impacts (social, economic, environmental) a major development project which includes a housing element.
To develop professional skills in assessing and evaluating the impact of major developments, weighing social, economic and environmental (including design) considerations, synthesising and communicating planning arguments.
To be able to evaluate the financial implications of development and the factors influencing the development decision.

Learning Outcomes
The learner will:

¿ develop in-depth knowledge about urban design, housing development and sustainability principles and practice
¿ develop advanced understanding of urban design and site planning principles;
¿ develop knowledge and critical understanding of sustainable design issues
¿ develop awareness of the complexity of different needs within the community and team working
¿ be able to critically and creatively evaluate the quality of design proposals including housing design
¿ understand the roles of planning and housing professionals, clients and users
¿ understand the complex relationship between market processes, built form and development patterns;

Scholarship, Enquiry and Research (Research-Informed Learning)

The learner will:

¿ Relate principles from academic and professional literature to the practice of design and development
¿ carry out market and needs analysis in relation to a particular site
¿ demonstrate effective research and appraisal skills, evident in data collection, investigation, quantitative and qualitative analysis, weighing evidence and reaching sound conclusions.
¿ understand housing and urban design within the planning and development context.
